How it all began and where it led:
Since 1992 Prof. Dr. Stefan Frühwald and Dr. Patrick Frottier have been working on research about “Suicide in Prison”. They conducted a unique case-control study of every suicide that occurred in Austrian correctional institutions between 1975 and 1999. The aim was to establish risk factors and to find an instrument that can easily be used for suicide prevention in any correctional institution.
The tremendous increase of suicide in prison during the last decades in relation to the suicide rate in the general population is one of the main reasons for the very strong interest in suicide prevention strategies:
The suicide rate in custody is 8 to 10 times higher compared to the general population
